Newscasters have been warning of an impending recession, the stock market has been dropping my 401k lost mora than $10,000 just over a couple months. It can be scary, especially if youre a millennial that graduated into one of the worst recessions weve ever seen.So even though we cant personally control the economy or prevent a recession, there are things we can do in our own lives. The steps below will protect you financially if we go into another recession.Leave your money aloneAs I mentioned above, I lost over $10,000 from my 401k in the last quarter of 2018. Well, I shouldnt say lost, because it will almost certainly retitel over time. However, it koranvers didnt feel good to see my balance drop that much after I worked so hard to save so much money. It can feel tempting in those moments to pull your money out of the stock market and put it somewhere safe. But thats actually the worst thing you can do The stock market is volatile. It goes up and down all the time. When youre investing for retirement or other long-term goals, youre in it for the long game. The most important thing to do is to leave your money alone and allow it to recover over time. Thats what I did and my 401k has already gained more than half of the amount that was lost last year.If youre closer to retirement age, then you do want to be a little bit more careful with your investments. You have less time for the market to recover, so youll want to have less of your money in the stock market and more in bonds and cash. Atarget date fundinvestment account can adjust this allocation for you automatically, but you can also work with a financial advisor to make sure youre set up for success.Build up your emergency fundIf Ive learned anything f rom the recent government shutdown, its that even gainfully employed Americans are woefully underprepared for emergency situations. Of course, individual employees should not be punished for the inability of our government to operate properly, but that is what happened. Many of the furloughed federal employees were unable to pay their bills orbuy groceriesafter missing two paychecks.Im not beating up on federal employees, because40% of Americanswould be unable to cover a $400 emergency expense. That means that almost half of us wouldnt be able to support ourselves if the recession cost us to lose our job. This is why its so important to build up anemergency savings account. Start small and save $400. From there, build up your account to make sure that you have at least enough to cover all of your expenses for three months. If you have children or if you are self-employed, youll want to have more than that on hand. Having this account fully funded will not only give you peace of mind , but it will protect you and your family if something (like a recession) happens.Talk to your bossIn order to maintain your peace of mind, or figure out if you need to find a new job, its important to know if your job is safe. If a recession is imminent, talk to your boss about the security of your position. This is especially true if your industry tends to be impacted negatively by an economic downturn. Youll want to know if you should start applying for other jobs if there will be cuts or layoffs.Make a plan to pay down your debtDebt payments can often be some of our biggest monthly expenses. They are also probably the most frustrating thing to pay when youre struggling to pay your other bills and support yourself. Consumer debt, like credit cards, should take the top priority. This is especially true because typically, you cant request to defer your credit card payments if you lose your job or come under some other kind of financial hardship. This is different from student loans , which you can defer in those types of scenarios. If youre worried about a future recession, now is a good time to make a plan to pay down your debt. Review your budget and see if there is any extra money available that you can put towards your debt. People don’t see themselves as one-dimensional, so you shouldn’t attempt to define them as such. These phrases make people defensive and closed off to your message, which is a really bad thing because you likely use these phrases when y ou have something important to discuss.Instead say: Simply point out what the other person did that’s a problem for you. Stick to the facts. If the frequency of the behavior is an issue, you can always say, “It seems like you do this often.” or “You do this often enough for me to notice.”5. “You look great for your age”Using “for your” as a qualifier always comes across as condescending and rude. No one wants to be smart for an athlete or in good shape relative to other people who are also knocking on death’s door. Progressive Discipline Warning Form Sample Progressive Discipline Warning Form Sample Disciplinary action is sometimes necessary when an employees behavior is negatively impacting his or her work or his or her co-workers work. In general, making the workplace less effective, harmonious, or productive is enough reason for an employer to begin progressive disciplinary action. The discipline warning is a tool that an employer uses to get an employees attention. A series of meetings between the employee and their manager have generally been held before the disciplinary action form comes into play. During these meetings, the manager coached and counseled the employee in an effort to help the employee to improve his or her performance. The disciplinary action is taken when the result of these meetings is not improved employee performance. Employers hope that by documenting the poor performance and the suggestions for improvement that they will get the employees attention in a way that counseling has not achieved. Employers need to remember that while other employees may know that the employee receiving a disciplinary warning is in trouble- usually because the employee tells them- they must honor employee confidentiality. From the employers perspective, no communication with staff can occur. Preparing the Disciplinary Action Form The disciplinary warning form is prepared before the manager and the employee meeting. It is usually written with the assistance of Human Resources staff who are experienced in documenting employee performance. A form similar to this sample is used or a formal letter is written to the employee. Either work. Managers may only have to write a disciplinary warning every few years and so they are inexperienced in the practice. HR, on the other hand, monitors all employee disciplinary action. HR staff ensures that employees are treated fairly, ethically and similarly for the same transgressions. They ensure the legality of the write-ups and often run them by an employment law attorney for advice. When the manager schedules the disciplinary action meeting, it is also customary for the HR staff person to attend. HR serves as a witness and also steps in when the manager loses his way. This is normal when managers lack experience in formal disciplinary procedures. You can train your managers to help them become more proficient in their handling of these meetings. However, in better, well-run workplaces that have effective hiring practices in place, managers will still only need to rarely practice this skill. This disciplinary warning form documents the discipline warning. This disciplinary warning form also documents and records the coaching or counseling discussion that accompanied the discipline warning. Following the disciplinary action, you need to provide the employee with an opportunity to respond in writing to the disciplinary action taken. This is placed in the employee file with this form. If your manager has effectively communicated the progression of employee discipline, this is rarely offered by an employee. It’s an important mission since according to a National Federation of the Bli nd, it’s estimated that only 10% of children who are blind are learning to read Braille, compared with over 50% in the 1950s.There’s a bittersweet story connected to the new launch. Morten Bonde, a Senior Art Director with the LEGO Group who is gradually becoming blind, served as a consultant on this project. One of Bonde’s life missions is to “focus on the brightness in life, even though the vision of the world is getting darker.”Bonde described feeling goosebumps all over his body the first time he heard about blind children playing with the new Braille Bricks. In the next phase of the project, Bonde said will be involved in “developing the visual concept that we will pack the Braille Bricks into. That be the development of packaging, apps, websites, etc. Here I will draw on the experiences I have as a visually impaired person with visual art direction skills. A fun mixture of skills I think.”Lesson learned from games: Life can throw a lot of curveballs. While it’s not always possible to actually work during some of the worst of it, imagine if you could find a way to turn your personal setbacks into a lesson for others or personal triumph.
