Is Bending the Rules Good for Your Career By, Nicole Crimaldi A few weeks ago, I started receiving  a stream of Facebook messages and wall posts  congratulating me on my quote in Redbook magazine.         Huh?!   What quote?! Turns out it was true.   I laughed out loud when I finally read it myself!   It was in a section of July 2009s Redbook about breaking the rules.   Ironically,    my quote said: After a long week of work, I occasionally use a Friday to bend my companys conservative dress code a little bit by wearing open-toed shoes or a leopard-print top! â€" Nicole Crimaldi, 25, Chicago A  few things ran through my head.   1.   Who knew that so many girls my age read Redbook! 2. When the heck did I give a journalist this quote?! 3. How ironic is it that I got quoted about breaking dress code when I write a career blog?! 4.   Is  bending the rules good or bad for your career? Of course the answer to the last  question is quite subjective, and depends on what industry you are in and who you are talking to.   Either way, Id like to believe that a little bending of the rules  makes you more creative, and possibly more valuable to those around you at work. Regardless of your industry, you are serving internal and external  clients each day.   By relying solely on policy, protocol and rules you may come off a bit stiff, lackadaisical and perhaps even lazy.   Getting too comfortable with the rules can lead to complacency in your job  and not pushing yourself to the next level of your career. Getting out of your comfort zone (and perhaps getting those around you out of THEIR comfort zones) might open new doors.   Dont be afraid to ask a question to someone you dont usually talk to in your organization  or to  get more information for a project.   Dont be afraid to get creative  with a simple customer service request in order to make some ones day.   Dont be afraid to ask why your manager wants you to do something if you dont understand why or feel it is unethical. People  may actually  come to respect you for your ability to push the status quo for the benefit of your company, co-workers  and clients.   Now of course, bending the dress code is a whole different story but- in my opinion- my clients and co-workers see my passion, energy  and personality through the way I express myself in my business wardrobe.   Passion and enthusiasm are contagious, so why not do a little bending of the rules to cheer up those around you and get ahead in your career?

Performance In The Workplace Are You Yourself At Work One of the many theories I came across in my first year of graduate school is the “crystallized self” theory. In a nutshell, the theory asserts that different situations bring about different selves that exist in one identity. In our everyday understanding, we are often fond of defining people by their “true selves.” For example, that who you are on a Friday night out with your friends is not the same person that you are on a Monday morning in an office meeting. The crystallization of self argues that those are both your “true selves” â€" just different sides of a crystal that represents your identity. Still, as Shakespeare acclaimed in As You Like It, “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players.” So indeed whether we are out on a Friday night or on a Monday morning, I think that we are performing aspects of our identity. Identity isn’t something that just is, as most humanities scholars would affirm; identity is performed. How do you perform at work? I once worked in an office where people thought I was quiet. My co-workers at the time just assumed that I was a reserved person. Most people who are familiar with me don’t know me as quiet. But the way I saw it, I had to perform. In hindsight, I didn’t fit in with the company culture so I did what I always do when I am in situations where I feel out of place: I said as little as possible. Now although this may be seen as me not being my “true self” â€" someone who is usually conversational and friendly, I have a side that is reserved and I think that particular workplace brought this side out. Was I performing at work? Yes. But I think I was performing an aspect of my identity albeit an often unseen one in this kind of setting rather than being untrue to myself. In a perfect world, we would all get to be more of the self in our identity that we believe most represent us. But alas, the world is not perfect. In the workplace, there are many performances going on from everybody from the CEO to the cleaning personnel. People are constantly negotiating and re-negotiating their identities either because they like the job or they need their job. And so this idea of “Are you yourself at work?” is a very erroneous question to consider if we accept that our identity is fluid rather than fixed. Perhaps a time when the question could be warranted is if our workplace demands that we go against values that we believe represent all of our selves. Our values more than anything else tend to be fixed, even within our very fluid identities. Of course most of this is organizational theory which is mostly privileged knowledge. The importance of discussing this topic, however, is so that we can identify the kinds of company cultures and workplaces that best suit an individual. We will always perform differently at work from how we will in other situations. But if we can identity which self we would like to be at work, identifying the kind of company culture that would best suit that self would probably make us a lot happier in our careers. So rather than asking, “Are you yourself at work?” the better question might be, “Do you like yourself at work?”

And it enables you to pro-actively pursue companies who will one day (maybe even today) have a job for you. You know you should be meeting with people, but you often wonder who are the right people to meet with. Your marketing plan is the answer. Meet with people who can answer questions to help confirm you are on the right path. In other words, do you have the right skillsets? Are you pursuing the right roles or the full-spectrum of job titles? Are you targeting the right companies? Do you want to learn how to create your personal marketing plan? Read this Creating Your Personal Marketing Plan When To Share Your Personal Marketing Plan Your marketing plan is best shared in person. People may not know what it is or how to use it. Its up to you to direct their attention to the section/s of the plan that you think theyll be able to help you with. More on that in the next section. It may help if you introduce your marketing plan by saying something like, This is the document I use to help guide my search and keep me on track. It lays out the criteria thats important to me in my next role and company. I really do not recommend emailing this to someone without having a conversation around it. Most people expect to see a resume and this is clearly NOT a resume so they may become confused. Oh, by the way, if someone does ask you for a resume before you talk with them, send them your personal marketing plan instead. Tell them that this document will be much more helpful to the conversation. (Read more about Networking Without A Resume) Ways To Use Your Personal Marketing Plan If you know what you want to do next and have developed a list of target companies, you can share your personal marketing plan with people you know and ask if they know anyone at the companies on your target list. If you do not know what companies you want to work for, but you do know what you want to do, you can share your personal marketing plan with people who can help you identify employers that might match what you are looking for. Lets say you dont know what you want to do for sure. You can share your personal marketing plan and focus the conversation around your top competencies, skills and industry knowledge to brainstorm ideas with people. (The resume makes it much more difficult to do this. It locks you into the previous roles.) Personal Marketing Plan Samples Each of these personal marketing plan samples has a slightly different feel. They each contain information the job seeker wanted to share and highlight. You can adapt any one of these to match your own job search goals. Sample 1 In the example below, Waldo has not included a list of target companies. It is his goal during his networking meetings to ask people for companies they think would be a match for his criteria. (He may also not want people to know exactly what companies he is targeting.) He has also included a high-level overview of his work history by year, industry and role to highlight his span of experience. Sample Marketing Plan 2 Sample 2 Timothy has a pretty solid idea of what hes looking for. His marketing plan also includes a mini resume since he is looking for something similar to what hes done. Sample Marketing Plan 3 Sample 3 This example is a bit more visual. Franco included some infographics to help highlight his achievements and areas of knowledge. The slight touch of color and graphic elements makes this less like a resume. Sample Marketing Plan visual Sample 4 This sample is really more to help you know what to put in the different sections and how to create your personal marketing plan.
